Our age seems to have outgrown Hegel. We have lost the feeling for religion, ‘the taste for the absolute’, which was the inspiration for Hegel’s metaphysics. After two world wars, the gulags and the Holocaust, we have lost faith in progress, though this faith is the cornerstone of Hegel’s philosophy of history. We lie in such a specialized and pluralistic age that no one expects to see the restoration of wholeness, the recovery of unity with ourselves, others and nature; but these were the grand ideals behind Hegel’s philosophy.
